Montesano 100% Iberian acorn-fed ham has achieved the highest global gastronomic award, the Diamond Award, from the prestigious International Taste Institute of Brussels 2024.

This award has been obtained after achieving the highest score for seven years, and represents a unique recognition that grants the highest seal of quality and international recognition.

The award was given by a jury of 250 chefs and sommeliers and top-level institutions, such as the Michelin Guide or Ferran Centelles, from the El Bulli Foundation, consolidating Montesano Extremadura at the top of the best acorn-fed Iberian products in the world.

The 100% Iberian acorn-fed ham from Ibéricos Montesano comes from animals raised in freedom, in the Extremadura pastures, a sustainable ecosystem unique in Europe. More than a million hectares of meadows and forests. Holm oaks, cork oaks, oaks, and other plant species populate the landscape. Morning mists cool the fields of this region, establishing a microclimate conducive to the development of fresh and aromatic herbs, coexisting with the master of these pastures, the Iberian pig. And it is in Jerez de los Caballeros, Badajoz, where Ibéricos Montesano is located and where, with the help of master and artisan ham makers, the 100% Iberian acorn-fed ham from Ibéricos Montesano and the rest of the products derived from the Iberian pig are produced.

Ibéricos Montesano controls the entire production cycle, starting with the raw material, the Iberian pigs. A genetic stock of 100% Iberian breeds, Retintos and Entrepelados, from their birth on Montesano farms, these animals are carefully cared for, as they constitute the basis of the production line. They live in freedom in their natural habitat. The diet of fresh grass, aromatic plants and acorns, together with baths in ponds, strengthens them. During the montanera, they consume 12 to 15 kilos of acorns daily, completing a process of up to 24 months that defines the quality of their meat, rich in fatty acids, vitamins and antioxidants.

After the montanera, the salting and post-salting of the hams and shoulders begins. Then, 2 to 3 years in natural drying rooms, where opening and closing windows to the mountain air gives the unique touch of flavour. These products are healthy, with fatty acids that help control cholesterol and contain vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant against ageing. Finally, two years in natural cellars, where the tastings of the master ham maker decide their quality before selling them in pieces, boned or ready to be cut.
